Lykes Anoka Coon-Rapids Boxing Club – “The Tradition Continues”
At 9418 Foley Blvd in Coon-Rapids Monday through Friday from 3:30 to 7:30 the tradition of teaching the Marques de Queensberry rules of boxing continues the long blood line of excellent boxers from the north suburban area. Coaches Ron Lyke, Arnie Entzel, Tom Halstad and Jim Maurine run the boxers through the paces in a modern, clean well kept gym which on the night I was there was bustling with activity.
On this Thursday night about half of the boxers were sparring, hitting the bags and jumping rope preparing for upcoming shows the weekend of the July 11th and July 17th. Tom Halstad who I had a chance to talk to between him tying gloves and offering advice told me that he and Jon Schmidt were training with Ron Lyke in his garage after Terry Marsh was forced to close the old Anoka Coon Rapids (ACR) Boxing Club. They moved into a Gym at another location before finding a home here and it is an excellent facility. With Gym dues priced at just $25.00 a month just to help support this nonprofit organization and with a ring, full weight-room, locker room and plenty of equipment you can see why the place is so busy.
Jon Schmidt was a carry-over from the old Marsh Gym and had over 50 amateur bouts before turning professional he likes the atmosphere and his coaching, Gavin Quinn a local Golden Glover trains here with his dad Frankie Quinn and Zach Bahr and his father Joel train here, “the gym has a nice family atmosphere” Tom said. Caleb Traux a former Upper-Midwest Golden Glove Champion and undefeated professional was in the gym training for his upcoming bout. The gym is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping young people reach their personal goals and is primarily an amateur program, on this night a lot of the boxers whose personal goals included winning an amateur title and then trying to win a professional title were training hard.
This area has a rich tradition of boxing excellence and the Marsh family was a mainstay in the area for years. Terry now lives in Hawaii and Joel is still involved at a Board of Directors level but 5 nights a week you can still hear the sweet sound of heavy bags thumping and the rhythmic pace of speed bags singing in Coon-Rapids. Towards the end of the workout I noticed an old article on the wall. It talked about how Caleb Traux and some members of his church in conjunction with the ACR Boxing Club had provided food one thanksgiving for 45 needy families in the area. It occurred to me that the Marsh’s would have been proud of that…you see at Lykes Anoka Coon-Rapids Boxing Club the tradition of giving back continues.
The gym is open Monday through Friday 3:30PM to 7:30PM. For more information call: 763-757-2498 or email: email@example.com. The address is 9418 Foley Blvd. Coon Rapids MN 55448.
